On Monday, August 21, 1911, the Mona Lisa disappeared from the Louvre. The scandal made headlines in papers everywhere. The thief, Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian employee of the Louvre, hid the painting for two years in his room, while the entire police force was looking for it. One evening several weeks after the heist, there was a knock at his door: Perrugia covered the Mona Lisa with a sheet just in the nick of time.
