Jacques Callot
The Christian hermit attacked by a multitude of monsters and demons inspired numerous artists. This film offers a close-up view of the two versions of The Temptation of Saint Anthony engraved at the beginning and the end of the career of the famed seventeenth-century etcher from Lorraine.
The carnivalesque and devilish world imagined by Jacques Callot is revealed in its most minute details and explained by the commentary of Maxime Préaud, curator-in-chief emeritus of the Prints and Photography department of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, who, himself an engraver, gives us a live demonstration of the etching technique. Erik Desmazières, a contemporary artist, presents his own interpretation of The Temptation of Saint Anthony, engraved in 1993.
